Do Hormones Shifts Change Hair Texture?

by Kiffe Coco. in , , ,

I was glancing through The New York Times website yesterday, and I came across a really interesting blurb, found in the Science Q and A section, about how hormone shifts can possibly change hair texture. One woman states that her son was born with pin-straight hair, but developed very curly hair at puberty. Why is that? Some researchers believe that hormonal changes can affect the shape of the hair follicle, which can determine the "straightness" or "curliness" of your hair. Hair follicles may be affected during stages like puberty, pregnancy and menopause, when your hormones are fluctuating like crazy. I, myself, can remember my curls being tighter when I was younger. They loosened as I grew older (which could also be attributed to heat and color processing). But even with all of the damage cut off, my natural curl is much different than my natural curl from when I was a child. It makes me wonder, was it a hormonal shift that caused my curls to loosen? Hmm... interesting. Any thoughts? What are you experiences?
