August Nails!

by Sophia B.

Ok, ok, I know I said I wouldn't + I know this may sounds like a sketch excuse but after I consulted with my nail technician she revealed to me that what I'd actually been using for my precious manicure was not calgel, but in fact something called bio-gel (I believe that was the name - I guess bio-gel had the most enticing colors at the moment) which is not as resistant as calgel. The calgel colors that were available mainly were the glitters, which we know I love anyway but sometimes I like to switch it up.

And I need to confess the other part:

As the previous gel manicures would peel off, I would manually finish the job myself by just peeling the rest off. A big NO NO! I didn't realize that my manual peeling of the gels (as opposed to soaking off like you're supposed to) was removing a layer from my nail, making my nails thinner in the process. Thus, my nails would become increasingly thinner with each failed manicure. And thin nails just do not support gel.

In short, my nail technician recommended that I keep my nails short and use exclusively calgel formulas (as they are thicker and provide a better protection to the nail).

In the end, I've learned if my nails start peeling I should opt for spending a few extra minutes to soak them off instead of ripping them off (like cookie monster with a cookie) as it can really damage your nails in the act.

I'm happy to report that these nails are going strong like normal!

What can I say, I guess I'll never let go of the gel. Oh, shame on me.

The Hard Truth & My Life Sans Calgel

by Sophia B.

So, I think the gel manicures that I've been getting for over a year now are finally taking its toll on my nails. Surprised? Of course not. I'm not really upset by the the current state of my nails, which I might add are pretty crappy sans gel, but by the fact that I need to give my nails a "break" from my beloved calgel. The thought of not having perfect, shiny, long-lasting manicures that dry in 60 seconds makes me cringe.

What was life like before calgel came along? A little dramatic, I know, but it's not only about the result of having pristine manicures, but about the bonds and community created at my favorite nail place and with my nail technician. I'm not saying I don't have an appointment tomorrow to get my nails done, but I probably won't be getting gel this time.

I haven't been able to keep on the gel for more than a week and a half. My nails are really thin, and I have a split on my thumb nail that doesn't seem to be going away. I've been rocking nails au natural for more than a week. Bottom line: My nails need to be done. It's so funny how a few years ago I could care less about my nails, but now, it's become a nice little gift to myself each month.

In any case, I'm back to the drawing board and giving regular manicures a chance.

Life and times...

Keep you posted,

Sophia

June Nails!

by Sophia B.

Inspiration:

This month I wanted something bright and funky for my nails, and I was inspired by a bouquet of flowers. I thought purple and green would be an interesting color combination. And, instead of the classic half-moon look (see here), I thought it would look cool for the half-moon to come to a point instead. All in all, me likey!

Have a great week, guys!
