I want something furry. Something that I can snuggle up with. A little something that depends on me. The big question is whether that’s a cat or dog (I'm not thinking of little "crumb snatchers" -- aka children -- yet). We (my boyfriend and I) have been talking about the idea of getting an animal for a while now, and I guess there’s nothing really stopping us, but I do have some reservations:
First and foremost, it’s the time and space issue. With both of us now working full-time, it might be hard to handle a little puppy (named Chanté) or kitty (named Georgio). It takes a lot of time and commitment to train a puppy, and I know it’s not like having a child, but in a sense, it’s close. I wouldn’t want to get something that I’d just end up leaving at the doggy day-care or at home by itself. (I have a real guilt complex about this.)
Now for the space issue: We live in a studio apartment. And even when it comes to entertaining two extra people, we have to think about where people are going to sit, or how we will all fit on our two-seater couch to watch a movie etc… Now add an animal into that equation... If we get a cat, then we have to figure out where the “cat” things, such as the litter box, will live in our already cramped space. And a dog with its dog toys and bed...I know, dramatic, but still.
Well, maybe it’s not the right time right now, but soon come, soon come we will make a little doggy or kitty part of the family :-)
So, to all my animal lovers, I ask you this: What has been your experience getting a puppy or a kitten while working or going to school?
