To continue with the theme of love this week, I decided to rewind time and bring us back with some classic 1960s love songs. There's something about this music that gives me goosebumps, and more generally, makes me so extremely proud of the richness of African-American culture. I was searching for something positive (since it's Black History Month) involving two ideas: being Black and being in love (since it was just Valentine's Day and all). Music was an obvious choice, but I wanted an image to go along with these incredible songs. Since I was inspired by the 1960s, I wanted to find a visual representation of Black love during this time. A beautiful (real) image of a Black couple, for instance, dressed in their 60s fashion, beehive dos, etc... I searched for hours online trying to find vintage images of Black couples, but the search results proved, unfortunately, that I was searching for something of an oddity. It was mind boggling.

Anyway, before I go on too much of a rant...I don't want to preach about why this is so important for us (and for society) to see, because we know it is. And even though I am the product of an interracial relationship (and in an interracial relationship myself), it still brings me great joy to witness such images because it is something that I feel is simply gorgeous, and so rare to see among the false images society has of Black relationships and ultimately, the Black family.

But moreover, it's true love that is rare, and so when we do encounter it, it is a beautiful thing that remains colorless and unconditional.

Here's to an all encompassing positive love through old school music!

And without further ado, here is old school love:

01 Our Day Will Come - Ruby and The Romantics

02 Something's Got A Hold On Me (Live) - Etta James

03 When A Man Loves A Woman - Percy Sledge

04 Hello Stranger - Barbara Lewis

05 My Girl - The Temptations

06 Baby I Need Your Loving - The Four Tops

07 I Do Love You - Billy Stewart

08 A Sunday Kind of Love - Etta James

Enjoy!

And eventually, I found one...

And of course, one of the most well-known power couples (below President Barack Obama and his beautiful wife, Michelle Obama)...

What are some of your favorite old school love songs?
