"Breaking Down the Black Myth" is a project that my good friend, along with several other New School graduate students, created. It speaks on the relationship among the African diaspora, specifically between Africans and African-Americans, using Harlem as the backdrop. Harlem, historically a predominately African-American community, is shifting to include the cultures of various African nations, due to the large influx of Africans to Harlem. This begs the question of how do these two groups view each other? The film illustrates that some perceptions of Africans and African-Americans are generally based on stereotypes, or in other words, myths. This film talks to both first and second generation Africans, and African-Americans, to inquire if the differences are too big, or too small, to be made.
