Review: For Colored Girls

by Kiffe Coco.

The strength, perseverance, and the beauty of Black women...

Tyler Perry recreated a beautiful, visual masterpiece interwoven with the poetry of Ntozake Shange.

The theater was packed opening night on Friday for Perry's film. I went along with a good friend, anticipating laughter, tears and joy. The cast, I found, were incredible. They all put so much of themselves into their characters. They pulled something out from someplace deep. You saw each of their energies transcend into their performance. It was phenomenal.

Some images however were disturbing. I actually left with an intense headache after I left the theater. It was a lot to absorb and my brain needed some time to reflect. But when a film draws a mental as well as a physical response from me, I know then it is quality.

All I could think of afterwards was the sheer strength of these women, and ultimately all women. The power we have to be resilient when our hearts are cut open and left to bleed. The power we have to pick up the pieces and keep it movin', as they say.

Power we have, when death looms in our shadows, to breath air, see light and heal. Healing is a very powerful trait that we as human beings possess.

I give For Colored Girls two thumbs up. Even though at times it is not easy to watch, it depicts truth. It is the truth of so many of us.
