I totally forgot to mention this crazy thing that happened to me last weekend. It involved the most inventive pick-up line ever (and it even went as far as to involve my hair)! We are covering all boundaries here.
Last weekend, after my friend and I went to see For Colored Girls, we slowly made our way back to the subway. And of course, after a movie like that, we had to have our little chit-chat on the corner before we went our separate ways. We were deep in conversation when all of a sudden , out of nowhere, this Asian guy comes up to me and says, (and I quote):
"Hey, I thought you were kind of cute, so I decided to come over and talk to you... What's your name?"
Now, for those who have seen For Colored Girls, I was feeling a little, shall we say, discouraged and disgusted by my male counterparts at the time.
I politely laughed (I don't know why I always feel obliged to respond to these fools). I replied by saying that I wasn't interested and that I have a boyfriend. I could have quite honestly said that I'm married, or have 10 kids, or I'm a lesbian, any sheer phrase that would properly indicate, "Leave me alone! I'm not interested!" But all of that wouldn't matter because "what that got to do with you and me?" We've all heard this one.
And as Alicia Silverstone would say in Clueless , "As if!"
Instead of walking away he goes on to say, "Well, is your hair interested? Because, you know, with hair like that, you got to be wild and crazy."
It was kind of comical, but really? I mean, really.
What does that even mean? He took the meaning of exotification to a whole other level! I sometimes ask myself, "Why do I attract these people?" I must have a sign on my forehead that says, "If you're an ignorant/misogynistic/ arrogant/rude you know what, please talk to me!"
Since when does uninterested mean interested?
Oh, that's it! We all must be playing hard to get.
Well, no thank you! And please leave me and my hair out of the equation!!
I just had to vent about that oh so special experience, and please feel free to do the same about any you've had. Let's get a kick out of this together.
On that note, hope ya'll are having a great weekend!
