Yesterday, I decided to try this calgel manicure I've been hearing so much about. I got them done at Marie Nails in Soho, NYC. Unlike acrylic, it's supposed to be healthier for your nails. It can be used for tips, or over your natural nail as a strengthener. It's also said not to chip or peel, and it dries literally on the spot. I've done silk wraps before in the past and it usually left my natural nails very weak and thin. I've also done manicures on my natural nails, and the polish would usually last no more than a week. (Don't you hate when you leave the nail salon, and your freshly done nails are already jacked up)?!
So naturally I was looking for something that was long-lasting, and equally not too damaging for my nails. And I think I found it!
You basically undergo the same process as you would a regular manicure: (I chose to apply the calgel just over my natural nail as a strengthener. No tips..this time :)
1) The nail technician applies one coat of a clear base gel on your natural nail. When dried, it is incredibly shiny. I could have gone with just this coat. It's shinier than any clear polish I've seen!
2) Two coats of gel color of choice is applied. (I chose grey).
3) Clear top coat is applied to finish.
4) Then you dry for about 5-6 minutes and voila!
There were so many brilliant colors, and really cool nail designs to choose from -- I was so confused. I believe the calgel "nail art" trend started in Japan, but some of the designs definitely resembled that of the local "hood" nail salon. Anyway, since it was my first time, I decided to go low-key. The results were incredibly clean, and my nails look and feel incredibly natural.
And removal is really simple, all you need is an acetone solvent (a.k.a nail polish remover).
I think as the holidays roll around, I might get a little crazier (gold glitter, design and all)!
Price: A little steep. I paid about $48, not including tip.
Bottom line: I am extremely happy with the results (however, I am only two days in). I am really curious to see how long they'll last. If I can get two (or even three) weeks out of these, then this is a certified winner!
