Film: For Colored Girls

by Kiffe Coco.

I know there has been some controversy as to whether or not Tyler Perry can portray African Americans in a non-stereotypical manner. Personally, I believe he has his own vision, and it is up to us as a community to be active in promoting and supporting what story we want to see on the silver screen. Anyway, I am curious to see his newest film, For Colored Girls. Originally a 1975 play, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf is a series of 20 poems speaking on the trials, tribulations and the untold secrets faced by women. I am going to revisit the book before I see the film. If a film has been adapted from writing, I like reading the writing before actually seeing the film just to get an additional sense of the work .

The film opens November 5. Will you be seeing it?
