Weekend

by Sophia B.

I love Spring, especially when the cherry blossoms start to bloom! Sitting outside in the sun, long walks, enjoying nature--all these spring elements definitely put a little pep in my step. Plus I just feel... healthier. Seriously, the sun does wonders! Also, can I just say that this weather also has me in the mood to do some Spring cleaning? Time to switch over the closet to spring wear.

Happy Spring!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I successfully made it into the Game of Thrones exhibition and I got to show off on the Iron Throne! I know some of you are saying "What the hell is this throne she's sitting on? And what's with all this Game of Thrones talk!" And for those you who do know, ish is so crazy right now!

Film: Searching for Sugar Man

by Sophia B.

Who is this guy known as Sixto Rodriguez? Apparently he was the Bob Dylan for many of South Africa's white liberals who grew up during the anti-apartheid movement. But South Africa? An American singer, whose quality of writing and music rival that of Dylan, and yet no one has ever heard of him this side of the Atlantic. Why?

Searching for Sugar Man

is an incredibly poignant documentary that offers an intimate look into the life of someone who for so long was as an enigma to so many, and who, more interestingly, died so many dramatic deaths in front of an audience he puts Shakespearean literature to shame. Imagine all you knew of your favorite musician was the picture on the cover of an album. Well, that's what it was like for many of Rodriguez's biggest fans in South Africa. The quest to find out who this uber talented sunglasses-wearing musician burned deep. As I watched the documentary, I became captivated myself by his music and intrigued by the persona behind that crystal clear voice. I was on on the edge of my seat (couch) as I was taken to some very unexpected places, and felt as if I too had been yearning for decades to know who this "Sugar Man" was.

Highly recommended!

Preview Rodriguez's Cold Fact (1970) album here.

Nerd

by Sophia B.

I am a huge fan of the book and HBO TV series Game of Thrones. I really never ever thought I'd be into anything involving things like dragons and fictional worlds, but alas, here I am. And I'm pretty die hard, too. So because I am a huge nerd and I revel in anything GoT-related, of course I would go to a traveling [interactive] exhibition for a chance to be in the same room with props and such used on the actual series. But not only were there going to be props, there was going to be the opportunity of a lifetime to partake in one of the biggest battle scenes in the book (digitally speaking of course). To defend the realm with flaming bows and arrows doused in wildfire. Those who are familiar with the term know that it means serious business.

So my friends and I headed out after work overloaded with excitement. But then we saw it. The line of other die hard fans who wanted to defend the realm with wildfire and sit on a replica of the infamous Irone Throne that practically wrapped around the block. And to top it off we were way beyond the cut off point.

Needless to say we didn't get in, no surprise--everyone knows you have to camp out in the AM on a weekday--what was I thinking! But the experience of being surrounded by other fans who are just as invested in the story and characters as much as the next person was worth it. So here's to camping out next week... Must. Defend. Seven. Kingdoms.

Have a great weekend, y'all!

From a nerd at heart,

Sophia
