In Theaters Today: "Rejoice and Shout"

by Kiffe Coco.

The powerful legacy of African-American gospel music can be found in the underpinnings of the many sounds and musical genres we know today: Rock n' Roll, Soul and Blues just to name a few. This music is soul powerful and soul healing. There's something in this music that makes your spine shiver, your heart beat, and your soul jump. The voice validates your pain and joy so that you are able to rise from adversary and celebrate life.

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a singer (just like Tina Turner). My mom even went as far as to try and sign me up for the gospel choir at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Harlem. The real deal. But I was too nervous and too intimidated to follow through with it. And my singing was, well, a long- shot from amazing. But when I heard the choir blow, my bones literally vibrated. It was breathtaking and awe-inspiring. It was God.

Rejoice & Shout features rare performances from some of gospel's most notable singers such as Mahalia Jackson, the Dixie Hummingbirds and the Staple Singers.

Check it out if you can! Have a great weekend!
